An Intro to SEO

SEO is the buzzword at the moment. Thanks to fierce competition between websites it’s become more important than ever for online success. But what exactly is SEO?

What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It describes a series of techniques which improve the visibility of a website in search engine result pages.

The goal of such optimization is to rank as highly as possible for a certain search query.

Naturally, this is easier said than done…

For example, if you’re an accommodation provider in a tourist town, such as Lakes Entrance, then you’ll want to rank well for search terms such as:

  • Lakes Entrance Accommodation
  • Lakes Entrance Hotel
  • Lakes Entrance Caravan Park etc

In addition, you must not forget those people who misspell words, such as “Lake Entrance” or “accomodation”. Even though, with commonly misspelt words, Google usually makes the correction itself.

Optimization techniques can be divided into two main categories:

Techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design are called white-hat SEO. They are considered safe and produce long term results. These techniques involve regular fresh content on your website, such as a blog, or events updates etc.

It’s also important for your domain name, page title, header tags and content to include the relevant keywords as well. Such as Lakes Entrance Accommodation, if that’s what you’re aiming for.

Black-hat SEO on the other hand, uses techniques that are disapproved of by the search engines.

Websites that employ these techniques can suffer a ranking penalty; worst case scenario being complete removal from the index. These practices include duplicate content, duplicate websites, backlinks on sites that have no relevance to your site.

When we talk about SEO we usually refer to Google as a search engine. After all, Google has a market share of 91%, making it the most important search engine. But the techniques we discuss are just applicable for Bing and Yahoo as well.

So when you’re considering your web page design, keep in mind, right from the start, to design your site around the requirements of good SEO practices.
